How to turn a meme into a game that keeps the joke
To turn a meme into a game, find the one thing the meme does, then pick a game rule that does the same thing. A meme about something chasing you wants a chase. A meme about weird creatures wants collecting. Get that match right and the game is funny before anyone reads a menu.

Four memes that already became games
- Nyan Cat to Lost in Space (2011). Chris Torres posted the pop-tart cat animation on April 2, 2011, and a YouTube upload by saraj00n added the song three days later. By May 12, 2011, Nyan Cat: Lost In Space was on iOS: the cat flies through space eating snacks, which is what the GIF already showed.
- Trollface to Trollface Quest (2012). The studio PPLLAAYY made a series of Flash puzzles where the obvious answer is always a trap, the trollface joke as a rule. Spil Games brought the series to mobile in 2015.
- Sanic to the first famous nextbot (2013). A badly drawn Sonic meme became a Garry's Mod addon in August 2013 that chases you around any map. One picture, one sound, a whole genre.
- Italian brainrot to Steal a Brainrot (2025). The AI creature memes spread on TikTok from January 2025. Steal a Brainrot, a Roblox game released May 16, 2025, turned them into things you buy, earn from and steal from other players.
Match the joke to a rule
Each of those games copied what the meme does, not only how it looks. Use this list to find your rule.
- Something appears or chases. A chase or hide game. The fear is the joke, so the sound matters more than the art.
- A cast of weird creatures. Collect, merge or trade. Rarity gives people a reason to keep going.
- A chant, beat or catchphrase. A rhythm or tap-on-the-beat game. Each hit plays the line.
- Calm while everything goes wrong. Survive a timer while the room gets worse. The joke grows with each second.
- A versus argument. A wave or army battle that settles the question people argue about in the comments.
- A reaction face. A quiz: show a situation, pick the face that fits, against a clock.
Steps that keep it funny
On Roam, Attack on Brainrot (meme giants for a grapple-swing slayer) and BRAINROT ARENA (meme cards in a tower battle) started from this same match of joke and rule.
- 1. Write the joke in five words. If you cannot, the game will not know what it is about either.
- 2. Put the joke in the first three seconds. No menus first. The meme should be on screen and doing its thing at once.
- 3. Make your own character. Keep the idea, change the face. Meme characters can have owners, and real people's photos need their consent.
- 4. Test on one friend. If they do not laugh by the first fail, change the rule, not the art. Memes fade in weeks, so a rough game now beats a perfect one later.
If you meant a meme party game
Some people searching this want a game where you make the memes. Those already exist:
- Make it Meme. A free online party game. Each round gives everyone a meme template to caption, then players vote. Its help page lists four modes: Normal, Topics, Same Meme and Relaxed.
- What Do You Meme? A party card game. A judge shows a photo card, everyone plays a caption card, and the judge picks the funniest.
- Poki meme games. Poki keeps a meme category of quick web games built on viral jokes.

Questions people ask
Can you turn a meme into a game without coding?
Yes. Some apps, Roam among them, build a playable game from a sentence, and block tools like Scratch let you build one by snapping code blocks together.
Is it legal to make a game from a meme?
It depends on the meme. Some characters have owners, and rights to Tung Tung Tung Sahur have been disputed. The safe route is an original character inspired by the joke, with no logos and no real person's face without consent. This is not legal advice.
What game types work best for memes?
Short ones where the joke reads at a glance: chases, collecting or merging, rhythm taps and quick quizzes.
What is the name of the meme caption game?
Online it is usually Make it Meme. As a card game it is What Do You Meme?, where a judge picks the funniest caption for a photo.
